This is inspired by a moment at my friends Stan and Emily's wedding. The lighting at the reception was so beautiful and wanted to do a little lighting piece...but, I replaced them with dogs..hehe. These are the dogs I live with. They are beautiful respectful poets and divas called Tigger and Kiki. What If? Nucleus Micro Show

When I got an email from Gallery Nucleus about participating in their "What If?" Themed Micro Show I was super excited because I was immediately inspired to do a series of....Annoying what if questions I used to ask my mother! As a child I was always trying to figure out different scenarios in which my mother would love me more than my sister. She insisted she loved us, "even steven"...but every now and then, Brooke slips up, and I can tell...I'm the favorite daughter. ;)

So if you're in LA come check out Gallery Nucleus-The Opening Reception is December 10th, 7-11 pm, and the show runs though Jan 2nd. It's comprised of small artworks from various artists working in the animation business. mine are all 5x5 Ink & Colored Pencil.

In the 90's

So I've been illustrating my life. These paintings are less literal...but my family did have a lot of dinners at the parkway plaza mall food court and there's something I really like about family scenes in specific/non traditional places. With these I was just trying to capture a certain quality to some of the memories I have. This is the start to my 90's mall series. I want to explore further, really pushing the 90's inspired palette. I've been looking at pattern in the clothes, pattern/material in surfaces for 80s 90s mall department store designs, and the brilliant magenta/purple/turquoise/blue palettes from movies like Pocahontas/Goofy Movie/Little Mermaid/Aladdin. I plan on doing more images exploring some of the stuff in my head and seeing how I can caricature this time, and my perception of this time...when everything was simple and magical..and I was new at life.

sometimes I think about finishing this alphabet book I started in school. It'd be nice to finish what I start but I always seem to get sidetracked with different ideas. I see 1 of 2 things happening with this book, 1 is that I work on it and bang it out, and the other option is that I finish it by the time I have a kid, and then I can read this book to the kid. This of course buys me plenty of time. I'd like to do a short, maybe someday I'll post some art I've done for that...For now you get a sad hippo.

Every few months or so we have a company update at work where we hear the latest happenings at the studio, it makes for great sketching time. Here are a few from today that I felt like coloring.

MOMO

Happy late mothers day to all the mothers out there. I'm sharing something I made for my mother aka MOMO. I wanted to illustrate various momo and me memories. Some of these are family jokes, and some are just memories.

I was at that age when you first start to use the bathroom on your own and I was very proud of using the public McDonalds bathroom all by myself. But my mother didn't trust that I wiped, so she pulled down my pants to check when people opened the door on us. This was a very embarrassing moment for young me and the funniest thing ever for sister and momo. A classic Olivares family memory.

Momo and me. I remember laying on her lap as a little girl and she'd run her fingers through my hair and say sweet motherly things. I remember thinking I was lucky to have a pretty mom.

My mom loves animals and when I was 5 she got an Eclectus parrot named Solomon "Boy" Olivares. He'd hang out on the couch a lot.

My mom was super creative with making Bows for me and my sister, many of which matched our outfits. We had a plastic bow rack on the bathroom door. She'd always ask "do you want a bow in your haaair??"

Background notes:
In first grade we got another parrot we named Phoenix. She'd always hang out with me when I was getting ready for school and play in the bathroom drawers. Also, everyone in the family wore a lot of embroidered Disney clothes.

In first grade, lice was going around the class. This was a very stressful time for Momo because I got lice. Momo was very thorough with checking our hair regularly to make sure they never came back.

Background notes:
Around the time after we got Phoenix, Solomon started plucking his feathers. He always had full reign of the house, walking around like a dog and playing with this stick he used to love.
Momo decorated our living room with my sister and my childhood artwork. I mostly drew parrots.

Momo had some skills on the sewing machine and made us quilts and outfits. She was famous for her "prairie dresses"(complete with petticoats). I think we were largely inspired by the American Girl Dolls. My sister was obsessed with the wizard of oz and Momo made her a Dorothy dress for Halloween.

Background note:
Solomon becomes naked...well except for his head, tail, and flight feathers. He used to lay in the sunlight from the windows and sunbathe his naked bird body.

So thanks Momo for everything and being such a wonderful mother and supporting me and Brooke. For putting bow's in our haair, and providing us with a happy home full of parrots, michael jackson music, quilts, and love.

I've been working on this triptych for my church for easter. The Church is called "The Message Church" So I was illustrating what the "message" is. It was based on illustrating these verses:

I Corinthians 15:2-4

the message that I proclaimed to you ... that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures

(is the top large illustrations)

and these three are the smaller supporting illustrations:

For the message of the cross is ... the power of God.

I've been working on this nativity triptych for Christmas. The imagery was largely inspired by some of the lyrics to "O come, all ye faithful":

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
Glory to God, glory in the highest;
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

There's a power in this song and the image of a choir of angels rejoicing the birth of Christ. I wanted to try to capture that feeling with this illustration.

A few weeks ago my friend Nick Pitera got a hold of two tickets to see a taping of the upcoming Mariah Carey Christmas special. So we drove down to la for this magical Christmas concert event.

Because it was a taping for a TV special we weren't allowed to bring any cameras/cell phones or anything with some recording device. Sooooo....what a perfect opportunity to practice my court room sketch artist skills. So I present my, courtroom sketch style documentation of our evening.

We arrived at the theater to see a long line already forming. We got in line and waited for a very very long time.

Nick was looking very dapper and festive (they encouraged a festive dress code)

So as we wait in line some of the guys who are in charge of organizing the event came by and gave us these bracelets that they were very vague about. And then they escort the people they gave bracelets to to the front of the line where they start placing us in seats. Turns out we were more like extras for a taping than a concert audience, so they place you wherever they want you.

and lucky day, they seated us in the front row.

This is the view of the stage, there was a lot of down time between songs.

We danced and sang along in the audience.

....And then Mariah heard Nick singing from the crowd, their eyes locked, and she pulled him onstage and there they continued in a magical christmas duet of All I want for Chrisstmaaaasss...

And I joined in onstage

Ok, not really...That last part is a dream sequence..but check out Nick for real.

He just released a Christmas EP on itunes and amazon.
and next Monday if you watch the abc Mariah Carey Christmas special, you'll probably see some cutaway shots of us dancing in the crowd. probably embarrassing myself :)

I'm really excited to be participating in the "Art Blocks for Ghana" A Charity Art Auction Created by the Top Artists in the Animation and Illustration Community to help build a Children's Home in Ghana

Here is my contribution:

The Picture Book Project Foundation’s Art Blocks for Ghana is an original art auction fundraising effort to build a home for orphaned children. The Picture Book Project Foundation is donating all proceeds of this event to The Hopkins Foundation, a 501 c3 non-profit organization that currently facilitates and funds the education of 13 orphaned Ghanaian children. When not in school, these children have no where to live and no one to care for them. The Hopkins Foundation is working to build a home for these kids; extending their reach to provide safe housing, food, and care in addition to education. www.hopkinsfoundation.org

The art will be exhibited in a opening gallery show in New York, and then again in Los Angeles. The auction will be held online through ebay.

Yesterday I was listening to The Moth, and heard this podcast about Alex the parrot. My family had parrots and actually regularly attended bird club meetings when I was younger where we met Alex the famous African Grey.

Listening to it reminded me of our old family parrot Solomon. He was my muse as a little girl. I only drew parrots , I was obsessed. Solomon was family and walked around the house freely like a dog. He was very territorial of the couch and my mother and liked to relax on the sunny spots on the carpet. He went a little crazy and plucked out all of his feathers that were within his reach. So I grew up with this naked plucked chicken running around the house singing jingles my dad made up about him. He was still beautiful to us but startling to any visitors.

This is one of my favorite bible stories. John 8 tells the story of a woman who is caught in the act of adultery. The pharisees bring her in front of the people and say that they are commanded to stone such women. Then Jesus defends her saying:

"If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."

Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

I've been wanting to illustrate different bible stories or parables. And this story really resonates with me. The verse comes back to me a lot. So often we "stone" people for their mistakes when who are we to pass judgment. I'm trying to be better at that.

My thesis film "Anchored" won the Best of Show award at the 2009 Siggraph Asia. I was so happy to be given the opportunity to attend the conference in Yokohama, Japan! I was able to see the electronic theater, and was honored to see my film play alongside so much amazing work, including some of my classmates from Ringling! Another highlight of Siggraph was having the opportunity to give a presentation to some of the student volunteers about making a short film.

I had an amazing time and got to see a lot of Tokyo when I wasn't at the conference. I took a lot of pictures and will probably be posting some paintings from the trip. I did this the other day of a nighttime scene in Shibuya.

I drew this for a christmas present to stevephillips, I had a lot of fun making this. It's prismacolor colored pencils on colored paper. Growing up I was obsessed with prismacolors, they were pretty much all I used and then I sorta abandoned them in college. So it felt good to revisit pencils. I really like prismacolors, chickens, and Steve...and someday I want to sail away in a houseboat.

I recently found out that my thesis film made it into siggraph asia, yay. So I was getting together my HD version for that. Now I have a full huge HD and so I'm putting a larger HD version of the film on youtube and vimeo. It's still not as big as the version I have, but it's a lot clearer than the first video I uploaded.

A couple months ago I was called for jury duty. We had a long time to wait in the beginning so I drew a bunch of people. Fulfilling my civic duty wasn't so bad and it was great for people watching. Especially because I was called to be a potential juror, so during jury selection I got to hear some really interesting backstories to the people I had been watching and drawing.

I spent most of yesterday watching MTV's marathon of Michael Jackson's videos through the years. I like drawing from the TV so I did these doodles of him as I watched him dance...man can he move. The Olivares family are big MJ fans, My mom raised us on MJ. I think we must have his every TV appearance archived in our VHS collection. I have a Michael Jackson playlist that I listened to a ton this year when I was working on my film and wanted to get into the groove. There's no one like Michael. His music is untouchable. He was such a innovative, inspiring, and passionate artist.

Thesis Film, Anchored

here it is, my thesis film...I've been working on this for the past year and a half and now it's finished and I'm graduating tomorrow.

Then Jesus told them this parable: "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

When I was first trying to come up with an idea I had the parable of the lost sheep in the back of my head. I really wanted to have a story that was founded with some message or parable. I had a hard time coming up with an idea based of this, and then I just started working on this idea of a man and origami cranes based off a digital painting I had done. The idea sorta fluidly came together after than point and I think that original message kinda worked its way back in. I just really wanted to create a feel good story that I could share with people that might have some emotional value. And I wanted to show how in people's roughest times if you don't focus on the negative God can show you, and use people to show you, an overwhelming hope and faith.

Childrens book continued

Thought I'd post my next page for my children's book. My story takes place in a Peruvian shanty town. My girl collecting colors lives in the bright pink one. I think its pretty much done...I could keep getting lost in all the houses but I think I'd like to move on to some more pages.
